SUNDAY EVENTS ACROSS CONNECTICUT

TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

The Trailblazing Legacy of Connecticut’s First Woman Pilot

Long before women were widely accepted in cockpits or newsrooms, Mary Goodrich Jenson was quietly breaking barriers in both. Born in Hartford in 1907 and raised near Brainard Airfield in Wethersfield, she developed an early fascination with flight at a time when aviation itself was still in its infancy.

That passion helped shape her career in a bold and unexpected way. Determined to become a journalist, Goodrich approached The Hartford Courant seeking work as an aviation reporter. The editor agreed — on one condition: she would first need to earn a pilot’s license. Undeterred, the 20-year-old completed her training in 1928, becoming the first woman in Connecticut to hold a pilot’s license and securing her place as the paper’s first female journalist with a byline. Her aviation column quickly earned her national attention and the nickname “the Girl Pilot.”

Goodrich Jenson’s impact extended far beyond the newsroom. She became a founding member of the Ninety-Nines, the international organisation supporting women pilots, flew in air shows and competitions, and made history again in 1933 as the first woman to fly solo from the United States to Cuba. During World War II, she championed the role of women pilots in domestic aviation, helping pave the way for broader inclusion in the field.

After a brief stint working as a writer for the Walt Disney Company, she returned to Wethersfield, where she remained active in civic life until her passing at age 96. Mary Goodrich Jenson’s life stands as a powerful reminder that Connecticut has long been home to innovators who dared to fly higher — even when the runway wasn’t built for them.
