TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
A Double Dam Disaster in Danbury
In the mid-1800s, Danbury built two earthen dams along Kohanza Brook to support its growing population and industrial boom. Known as the Upper and Lower Kohanza Dams, the structures were meant to provide a steady water supply while feeding the brook that ran into the heart of downtown. For years, the system appeared to work as planned, even after a small crack was noticed in the upper dam and largely dismissed as harmless.
That confidence proved tragically misplaced. During a bitter winter evening in 1869, the Upper Kohanza Dam gave way under the pressure of ice-filled water. The sudden collapse sent a roaring surge downstream, obliterating the Lower Kohanza Dam and releasing a devastating wall of water, ice, rocks, and debris toward Danbury’s center in a matter of minutes.
The flood tore through Main Street and surrounding areas with overwhelming force, destroying homes, factories, bridges, and railroad tracks. At least 11 lives were lost in a disaster that unfolded in less than half an hour, leaving lasting physical and emotional scars on the town. Though the dams were later rebuilt on a smaller scale, the Kohanza flood remains the most catastrophic event in Danbury’s history, a sobering reminder of how quickly overlooked risks can turn into irreversible tragedy.

Flexible tickets, comfy seats, and classic popcorn—without the full-price sting
If your idea of a great night out includes a big screen, buttery popcorn, and zero stress over ticket prices, this deal is worth a look. Groupon is offering AMC Yellow Tickets and ticket-plus-snack combos that let you catch standard 2D movies at participating AMC Theatres locations while saving up to 38%. The tickets are valid seven days a week, making them perfect for spontaneous plans or future movie nights.
You can choose options for one, two, or four tickets, or bundle them with popcorn and drinks for an easy all-in experience. Once redeemed, the tickets don’t expire, so there’s no rush to use them right away. They also make an easy gift for movie lovers, families, or anyone who’s always down for a trip to the cinema.
With plush recliners, reserved seating, and access to premium upgrades like IMAX and Dolby Cinema (with surcharges), AMC turns a simple movie into a full-on experience—just at a friendlier price point this time around.
