But despite their deep affection, Earhart remained wary of marriage as an institution, once describing it as a kind of “cage.” Her letter made it clear that independence, mutual honesty, and personal space were essential — even leaving open the possibility of walking away if happiness faded.

Their marriage lasted until Earhart’s disappearance in 1937, and her Noank wedding remains one of the most striking examples of how she challenged social norms not just in the air, but in life.
