ON THIS DAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
🔥 A Devastating Fire and a High-Profile Murder Trial Rock New Haven’s Malley Family
February 28, 1882, was a day of disaster for New Haven businessman Edward Malley. The founder of Malley’s department store had built an empire from humble beginnings, transforming a small dry goods shop into one of New England’s largest retail establishments. But on this morning, he awoke to devastating news—his massive store was engulfed in flames.
A night watchman had spotted the fire around 4:00 AM, but the flames spread too quickly to contain. By the time firefighters arrived, Malley’s entire store was lost, with damages estimated at $175,000—equivalent to millions in today’s money. It was the second time in seven years that fire had ravaged the business.
As if that weren’t enough, Malley was already facing another crisis—his son and nephew were in jail, awaiting trial for murder. The two young men were accused of poisoning Jennie Cramer, a beautiful New Haven girl, in a scandal that captured national headlines. Malley had spent large sums on their defense, hiring private detectives in hopes of clearing their names.
Though the Malley boys were eventually acquitted, rumors of bribery and witness tampering followed the family for years. Still, Malley’s department store survived, becoming a beloved icon of New Haven shopping for much of the 20th century. It was a winter of fire, scandal, and survival—all unfolding on this day in Connecticut history.
