TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
When New Haven Sheltered the “Regicides”
In the mid-1600s, England was rocked by civil war between supporters of Parliament and the monarchy. The conflict ended with King Charles I being tried and executed in 1649, a decision signed by dozens of commissioners who believed the king had betrayed the nation. But when Charles II reclaimed the throne in 1660, those same men were suddenly branded traitors and faced brutal punishment if captured.
Two of the commissioners who had signed the execution order, Edward Whalley and William Goffe, fled England and sailed to New England seeking refuge among sympathetic Puritan communities. After briefly staying in Boston, the pair traveled south and arrived in New Haven, where local leaders quietly helped protect them from royal agents searching for the king’s killers.
New Haven’s residents went to remarkable lengths to shield the fugitives, delaying royal investigators and secretly hiding the men in a rocky shelter on West Rock, now known as Judges’ Cave. The pair later moved between safe houses in the region before eventually leaving Connecticut as pressure from the English crown intensified.
Today, the story of the regicides remains part of New Haven’s identity. Judges’ Cave still overlooks the city from West Rock Park, and several streets bear the names of the men who once hid there, preserving the memory of a time when the colony risked everything to give refuge to enemies of a king.
