TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
Staffordville Dam Disaster Sends Devastating Flood Through Connecticut
In the late 1800s, as mills and factories expanded across eastern Connecticut, local leaders built a large reservoir and dam near Stafford Springs to help regulate water flow for industry. But shortly after major upgrades were completed, days of heavy rain exposed serious weaknesses in the structure. Engineers attempted to relieve pressure by opening the floodgates, but it wasn’t enough.
The dam ultimately failed, unleashing a massive surge of water down the Willimantic River valley. As it rushed downstream, it destroyed multiple smaller dams, amplifying the force of the flood before it slammed into Stafford Springs. Buildings, homes, bridges, and even a church were swept away in the chaos, leaving widespread destruction behind.
By the time the water receded, lives had been lost, hundreds were left without work, and the town faced significant economic damage. The disaster became one of the region’s most dramatic examples of how quickly infrastructure failure can turn into a community-wide crisis.

Big-screen experience, smaller price tag
If your “we should go out more” plans keep turning into Netflix… this is your sign. and lock in major savings on movie nights without sacrificing the experience. With AMC Yellow Tickets, you can catch the latest releases any day of the week, plus bundle options that include popcorn and drinks so you’re fully set from previews to credits.
This isn’t your basic theater setup either. We’re talking plush recliner seating, immersive sound, and upgrade options like IMAX and Dolby Cinema if you want to go all in. Whether it’s a casual date night, group hang, or solo “main character” moment, this deal makes it way easier to say yes to going out—without the usual price guilt.
