TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
P.T. Barnum’s Short-Lived Run as Mayor
Known worldwide as a showman and entrepreneur, P.T. Barnum also stepped into politics—and not always successfully. In 1875, he was elected mayor of Bridgeport, bringing with him strong views on reform, particularly around temperance and public morality. While his ideas worked well during his time in the state legislature, they didn’t land the same way at the city level.
As mayor, Barnum pushed strict enforcement of liquor laws, shut down gambling spots and brothels, and attempted to reshape city operations. These moves quickly created tension with local officials and the public, leading to constant conflict throughout his term. After less than a year, Barnum chose not to continue, openly expressing relief at stepping away from the role.
Despite his rocky time in office, Barnum’s impact on Bridgeport went far beyond politics. He went on to build an even greater legacy through his entertainment empire and continued to invest heavily in the city, helping establish landmarks like Seaside Park and the Barnum Museum—proof that while he may not have thrived as mayor, his influence on Connecticut was lasting.

Right now, you can grab a 6-month Cinemark Movie Club membership at a discount, giving you one free 2D movie ticket every month, plus 20% off concessions and no online booking fees. Even better, unused tickets roll over, so you’re not losing value if you skip a month.
