TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
New Haven’s Visionary Beginnings Take Shape
In the late 1630s, Puritan minister John Davenport set out to build a new kind of community, one rooted in religious ideals and free from the pressures of life in England. After briefly settling in Massachusetts, Davenport and his followers looked south along Long Island Sound for a place to start fresh. They found it in an area known as Quinnipiack, where a natural harbor and opportunities for trade made it an ideal location.
Soon after arriving with hundreds of settlers, the group established what would become New Haven. The town was carefully planned using a grid layout, with a central green at its heart, making it one of the first planned cities in America. Early leadership focused on creating a tightly governed, faith-driven society, where daily life was shaped by strict moral and religious principles.
Over time, however, the reality of commerce began to outweigh the original vision. New Haven’s prime coastal location helped it grow into a major trading hub, shifting its identity from a purely religious settlement to a thriving economic center. While the original goal of a “perfect” spiritual community didn’t fully last, the foundation it created helped shape the city’s lasting influence in Connecticut.
