HAVE YOU SEEN THIS YET?

TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
A War That Changed Early Connecticut
Tensions between English colonists and the Pequot tribe had been building for years as both sides competed for control of key trade routes in the Connecticut River Valley. By the mid-1630s, clashes had escalated into raids, standoffs, and a prolonged siege of an English fort at Saybrook, signaling that relations had reached a breaking point.
That breaking point came after a deadly attack on the settlement of Wethersfield, where Pequot and allied warriors killed several colonists, captured two young girls, and destroyed livestock critical to the settlers’ survival. The incident pushed colonial leaders to take decisive action, leading to a formal declaration of war in 1637.
What followed was one of the most brutal conflicts in New England’s early history. A combined force of English soldiers and Native allies launched a devastating attack on a fortified Pequot village near present-day Mystic, killing hundreds. The war ended with the Treaty of Hartford in 1638, permanently shifting power in the region and marking a turning point in relations between colonists and Native peoples.
