If you’re a homeowner, you know unexpected expenses are par for the course. One way to help shield your finances is to get a home warranty. Unlike homeowners insurance, which covers natural disasters and theft, a home warranty could help safeguard you against costly repairs of eligible essential home appliances and systems due to normal wear and tear.

THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

CONNECTICUT’S FIRST FEMALE PATENT HOLDER

In May 1809, Mary Kies of Killingly became the first woman in U.S. history to receive a patent.

At a time when most women couldn’t legally own property, Mary Kies made history by becoming the first woman in the United States to receive a patent in her own name.

Her invention? A method for weaving straw with silk or thread—an innovation that helped improve the production of women’s hats during a period when domestic manufacturing was on the rise.

Though Kies never profited from her idea due to changing fashion trends, she was praised by none other than First Lady Dolley Madison for her contribution to American industry. Her patent may have faded into history—lost in a fire at the U.S. Patent Office—but her trailblazing legacy lives on.
