Maurice Sendak Changed Children’s Books Forever
Maurice Sendak, the legendary children’s author and illustrator best known for Where the Wild Things Are, spent many years living in Connecticut and became one of the most influential voices in children’s literature. Born in Brooklyn in 1928, Sendak was largely self-taught and started his career illustrating comic books and stories for other writers before publishing his own groundbreaking work in the early 1960s.
His most famous book, Where the Wild Things Are, completely changed what children’s stories could look and feel like. Instead of focusing on perfect behavior and tidy life lessons, Sendak explored imagination, anger, loneliness, and emotion through the story of Max and the giant wild creatures he encounters on a fantasy island. While some adults initially criticized the book for being too strange or frightening, children connected with it immediately, helping turn the short illustrated story into one of the most beloved children’s books ever published.
Over the course of his career, Sendak received some of the highest honors in literature and the arts, including the Caldecott Medal and the National Medal of the Arts. His work continued influencing generations of readers, artists, filmmakers, and storytellers long after Where the Wild Things Are first appeared on bookstore shelves, proving that children’s books could be imaginative, emotional, and deeply honest all at once.
