TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
Connecticut’s Largest Recorded Earthquake Shook the State in 1791
Connecticut experienced its largest recorded earthquake in 1791 when two powerful tremors struck within minutes, shaking homes and alarming residents across much of the Northeast. Reports of the earthquake stretched as far as Boston and New York City, with damaged chimneys, collapsed stone walls, and even cracks forming in the ground throughout parts of Connecticut.
Many people believed the quake originated near Moodus in East Haddam, an area already famous for mysterious underground rumblings known as the “Moodus Noises.” The name “Moodus” itself comes from a Native American term often translated as “place of noises,” reflecting the region’s long history of strange seismic activity even before colonial settlement.
Modern scientists estimate the earthquake likely measured between 4.4 and 5.0 in magnitude, strong enough to cause noticeable damage across the state. Smaller earthquakes and seismic swarms still occur in the Moodus area today, keeping alive one of Connecticut’s strangest and most fascinating natural history stories.
