Back in 1791, the small town of Moodus in East Haddam made seismic history—literally. Known by Native Americans as Machimoodus, or “the place of noises,” the area had a reputation for mysterious rumblings long before Connecticut’s largest recorded earthquake struck.
The main quake hit with two powerful jolts in quick succession, cracking the earth open with a visible fissure and shaking homes to their foundations. Stone walls crumbled, chimneys toppled, and aftershocks—over 100 of them—rattled nerves throughout the night. The tremors weren’t just local either. Reports came in from as far as New York City and Boston.
