TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
Israel Putnam: Connecticut’s Fearless Revolutionary War Hero
Israel Putnam earned a reputation as one of Connecticut’s boldest military leaders long before the Revolutionary War began. After moving to northeastern Connecticut in the 1740s, Putnam served with distinction during the French and Indian War, where his bravery and daring battlefield reputation quickly made him a respected military figure throughout New England.
When tensions between the colonies and Britain escalated, Putnam became a leading member of Connecticut’s Sons of Liberty and later one of the first major generals appointed under George Washington in the Continental Army. He became especially well known for his leadership during the Battle of Bunker Hill, where his fearless personality and willingness to fight alongside his troops made him a popular figure among soldiers.
Although his Revolutionary War leadership had mixed results at times, Putnam remained widely admired throughout his life for his courage, loyalty to his men, and dedication to the American cause. Today, his legacy continues across Connecticut through statues, memorials, and Putnam Memorial State Park in Redding, which preserves part of the Revolutionary War encampment connected to his troops.
