New London Men Pioneer Steam-Powered Atlantic Crossing
Back in 1819, Connecticut made waves in maritime history when Moses and Stevens Rogers of New London launched the S.S. Savannah, the very first steam-powered ship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. This hybrid vessel combined traditional sails with a steam engine and retractable paddle wheels—a bold innovation in an era still dominated by sailboats.
The journey was no small feat. Despite their efforts, the Rogers brothers couldn’t find a single paying passenger willing to brave the experimental ship, so the crew sailed without anyone else on board. Battling rough seas, they mostly relied on sails, using steam power for only a fraction of the 29-day voyage. Yet, their arrival in Liverpool marked a major milestone, opening the door to a new age of steam-powered sea travel.
Though passengers remained wary for decades after, the S.S. Savannah’s daring expedition paved the way for the steamships that would soon revolutionize ocean travel forever. Connecticut’s maritime legacy still echoes in this pioneering feat of courage and innovation.
