TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
1816: Connecticut’s “Year Without a Summer”
In 1816, Connecticut experienced one of the most unusual weather disasters in American history, later remembered as the “Year Without a Summer.” Across the state, temperatures plunged unexpectedly during the growing season, bringing frost, cold winds, and even summer snow that devastated crops and disrupted daily life.
Farmers who had planted in early spring saw their efforts undone by repeated freezes well into June and beyond. Corn, wheat, and fruit crops failed across New England, including Connecticut, leading to food shortages, rising prices, and widespread economic strain. Many residents described needing heavy coats and constant fires even during what should have been warm summer months.
The extreme conditions were later linked to a massive volcanic eruption in Indonesia the year prior, which affected global weather patterns. Combined with natural climate fluctuations, the result was a harsh agricultural collapse that pushed some New England families to seek new opportunities farther west, reshaping migration patterns in the years that followed.
