TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

Helen Keller Honored By President Kennedy

Helen Keller, a longtime Easton, Connecticut resident and global advocate for disability rights, received a special birthday message from President John F. Kennedy in 1961 recognizing her extraordinary impact on education, accessibility, and human rights.

In his letter, Kennedy praised Keller as part of an elite group whose accomplishments shaped history, highlighting her lifelong dedication to improving opportunities for people who are blind and deaf. Her advocacy work had already made her an international figure long before settling in Connecticut, where she continued writing and speaking on social causes.

Born in 1880, Keller lost both sight and hearing as a toddler due to illness. Her breakthrough came when educator Anne Sullivan taught her to communicate through sign language, unlocking a path that led Keller to graduate from Radcliffe College and become a globally recognized author and lecturer.

After moving to Easton later in life, Keller remained active in advocacy and public engagement. Her influence was further recognized through multiple presidential acknowledgments over the years, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom awarded in 1964, cementing her legacy as one of the most inspiring figures in American history.

Play a classic Connecticut course built for challenge, comfort, and a seriously good day on the fairway

Tee up an 18-hole round at the historic Norwich Golf Course, a city-owned championship layout in Norwich that blends classic design with a welcoming public play experience. This deal lets you choose a round for one, two, or four players, each including a golf cart so you can cruise the fairways and focus on your game across 6,000+ yards of rolling terrain.

Built in 1926 and still holding its reputation for well-kept greens and a fun but challenging layout, this course is a favorite for both casual golfers and regular players who keep coming back. Between the scenic course design, friendly pro shop, and on-site Caddy Shack restaurant, it’s an easy full-day escape that feels like a mini getaway without leaving Connecticut.
