SUNDAY EVENTS ACROSS CONNECTICUT

TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

A Look Back at Connecticut’s Historic June Moments

Connecticut’s past is packed with surprising stories—and June has been especially eventful over the centuries.

During the American Revolution, patriots spirited away the Liberty Bell from Philadelphia and hid it in the basement of Zion Episcopal Church in Litchfield to protect it from British forces.

Fast forward to the 19th and 20th centuries, and June 20th became a date of progress and innovation. In 1867, Bridgeport hosted the Third Connecticut Agricultural Fair, showcasing everything from prize livestock to the latest farming machinery. A few decades later in 1913, the state’s first official highway was launched between Danbury and Newtown—kicking off Connecticut’s journey toward a modern road system. That transformation continued with the 1956 opening of the Connecticut Turnpike, a 128-mile route that made travel quicker across the state.

And in 1995, Mystic Seaport unveiled its newly restored exhibit of the Charles W. Morgan—the last surviving wooden whaling ship, originally built in 1841. Now a star attraction, the ship invites visitors to walk its historic deck and dive into the state’s seafaring heritage.
