TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
The Liberty Bell’s Whirlwind Tour Through the Nutmeg State
In the summer of 1903, Connecticut got a rare brush with one of America’s most treasured symbols of freedom—the Liberty Bell—during its patriotic journey to Boston.
On its way to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill, the Liberty Bell passed through five Connecticut towns in just 24 hours. The bell rolled into Stamford shortly after 6:00 p.m., perched on an open-air train car that allowed locals a fleeting but unforgettable glimpse. From there, it made brief appearances in Bridgeport and New Haven before continuing east.
The following morning, Hartford welcomed the bell with a turnout of over 10,000 people, even as rain poured down. One final stop in Plainfield gave residents a chance to snap rare photographs and lay eyes on an icon that rarely left its Philadelphia home. Then, just like that, it was off to Boston.
For many, it was a once-in-a-lifetime moment—to see, and in some cases touch, the bell that rang out liberty in 1776.
