TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
Wyoming Valley Conflict Turns Deadly In Revolutionary Land Dispute
During the Revolutionary era, competing colonial land claims helped spark violent conflict in the Wyoming Valley, an area both Connecticut and Pennsylvania believed they rightfully controlled. Tensions between settlers escalated as the broader war for independence intensified, turning a long-running dispute into a battlefield struggle.
A combined force of British troops, Pennsylvania loyalists, and Iroquois warriors launched an attack on Connecticut settlers defending Fort Forty in 1778. Outnumbered and tricked into leaving their defenses, the militia was overwhelmed in a devastating ambush that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of defenders and widespread destruction of settlements.
In the aftermath, surviving settlers faced harsh terms and the collapse of their frontier communities. Although some later returned, the dispute over the Wyoming Valley continued for years, becoming one of the most infamous examples of colonial land conflict during and after the Revolutionary War.
