TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
Connecticut Tornado Outbreak Leaves Historic Path Of Destruction
A massive tornado outbreak in 1989 tore across Connecticut, producing multiple twisters that carved a destructive path from the northwest corner of the state toward the New Haven region. The storms caused widespread damage, including the loss of life, hundreds of injuries, and extensive destruction to homes and infrastructure.
One of the strongest tornadoes, later rated F4, hit Hamden with winds exceeding 200 mph. Entire neighborhoods were heavily damaged, while in Cornwall, Cathedral Pines—one of the nation’s rare old-growth forests—was nearly wiped out. Additional twisters damaged churches, hundreds of homes, and large sections of Waterbury.
Recovery took weeks as emergency crews, the National Guard, and federal aid supported cleanup efforts. Officials described the event as devastating but noted it could have been far worse given the scale of destruction across the state.
