TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
A Test Flight Turns Tragic
In July 1933, what began as a routine test flight from Norwalk Airport quickly turned into a devastating accident. Three young men took to the skiesāone, the 18-year-old son of the airportās owner; another, a 20-year-old passenger; and the pilot, who also worked as a mechanic at the airport.
Not long after takeoff, the plane went into a sudden nose dive and crashed near the airportās edge. Two of the men died instantly. The pilot survived the initial impact but was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The crash rattled the close-knit aviation community and served as a sobering reminder of the risks early pilots and hobbyists faced during the golden age of flight.
