SUNDAY EVENTS ACROSS CONNECTICUT

TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

The Birth of Baseball in Hartford

Long before packed stadiums and pro contracts, baseball in Connecticut started with a group of local enthusiasts and a mission to play “Base Ball” the right way. In 1862, the Charter Oak Base Ball Club became Hartford’s very first organized team, committed to playing by “New York” rules—still a novel concept in the region at the time.

Their games often unfolded in Bushnell Park, and later at Colt Park, as baseball fever spread. By 1865, the club had wrapped up a strong season with a final match in Worcester, Massachusetts. To celebrate their wins, the team received a handcrafted miniature bat, said to be made from the legendary Charter Oak tree itself. It came in a rosewood box and marked the start of a new tradition: Connecticut’s best team would hold the symbolic bat until another club bested them.

Though the Charter Oak Club eventually disbanded, their legacy lived on. Hartford would go on to host the state’s first professional team, the Hartford Dark Blues, and baseball’s roots only grew deeper. Today’s thriving minor league scene owes a quiet debt to those early pioneers who made the game part of Connecticut’s story.

Save up to 35% on AMC movie tickets and snack combos—no expiration date, no blackout dates.

There’s nothing like the magic of the movies—especially when you can skip the sticker shock. Right now on Groupon, you can snag AMC Black Tickets (a.k.a. the good ones) starting at just $14.27 with code SHOWTIME, plus optional snack bundles for peak movie-night vibes.

These tickets work at any AMC location, for any standard 2D film, and don’t expire once redeemed. That means you can grab ‘em now and save them for the next big release—or just roll up this weekend and finally see that movie everyone’s been talking about.

Even better: You can bundle tickets with popcorn + drinks and still save up to 35%—yes, even on snacks.
