TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

The Day Connecticut Walked Off the Job

In August 1919, Connecticut hit pause — not by choice, but by mass protest. Thousands of workers across the state walked off the job in a massive, coordinated strike that spanned industries and sent a shockwave through New England’s economy.

The spark? A postwar economy in chaos. After World War I, returning soldiers displaced women from wartime factory jobs, inflation soared as high as 17%, and wages stayed stubbornly low. Frustration boiled over.

On one day alone, mill workers in Rockville, truck drivers in Bridgeport, auto part makers in New Haven, and railroad employees up and down the coast walked out. In New Haven, more than 2,000 railroad workers halted both freight and passenger service — effectively freezing a major artery of commerce.

The August strike became one of the largest single-day labor stoppages in Connecticut history. It didn’t just disrupt business — it demanded that the voice of labor be heard loud and clear in the new postwar reality.
