TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

Gustave Whitehead’s Flight That Challenged Aviation History

In August 1901, German-born inventor Gustave Whitehead reportedly took to the skies in Fairfield, Connecticut, flying his motorized Flying Machine No. 21 roughly half a mile at about 50 feet above the ground. The flight came more than two years before the Wright Brothers’ famous 1903 flight at Kitty Hawk.

Whitehead had spent years experimenting with kites, gliders, engines, and aircraft before settling in Connecticut. His unusual aircraft featured bat-like wings and two engines, one for flight and another to power the wheels on the ground. Newspaper reports and eyewitness accounts supported his claim, but the lack of photographic proof has kept his achievement heavily debated.

The controversy has continued for more than a century. Connecticut officials have honored Whitehead’s contributions, including declaring August 14 “Gustave Whitehead Day,” while aviation historians remain divided over whether he truly achieved the first powered flight.
