SUNDAY EVENTS ACROSS CONNECTICUT

TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

Connecticut’s First Woman Lawyer

In the late 19th century, when women were expected to keep to the home, Mary Hall was busy rewriting the rules. Born in Marlborough in 1843, Hall grew up with a father who believed women deserved the same educational and civic opportunities as men. With his encouragement, she attended Wesleyan Academy and spent years teaching before a trip to Hartford in 1877 shifted her path forever.

At a women’s suffrage convention, Hall heard attorney John Hooker speak about the limited rights of married women. Inspired, she began studying law under her brother Ezra. After his sudden death, Hooker himself took her on as a student, mentoring her toward an ambitious goal: joining the Connecticut bar.

In 1882, after passing her exam, Hall’s admission to the bar was challenged — not for her skill, but for her gender. The case went to the Connecticut Supreme Court, which ultimately ruled in her favor, making her the state’s first female attorney. She went on to a four-decade career focused on property rights for women and helped lead the Hartford Women’s Suffrage Club. In 1920, Hall witnessed another victory — the ratification of the 19th Amendment, granting women the vote she had long fought for.

Score up to 31% off a private escape room at Escapology Trumbull

If your friend group’s idea of “fun” is arguing over where to eat, it’s time to level up. Escapology Trumbull puts you in the middle of a 60-minute, high-stakes puzzle where teamwork is the only way out. You’ll choose from cinematic scenarios — solve a 1930s jungle mystery in Lost City, clear your name in Mansion Murder, stop a Cold War disaster in Cuban Crisis, and more.

With this Groupon deal, you and your crew get the entire room to yourselves — no strangers tagging along — for up to 31% off. Pick your team size (4, 6, or 8 players), book Monday–Thursday, and crack the codes before the clock hits zero.

Just be warned: friendships will be tested, brain cells will be stretched, and you might get a little too into character. But hey, that’s all part of the escape.
