Money ranked this year's top pet insurance providers side by side, so you can see who covers what, which plans are actually affordable (some start at $10 a month), and which fits your dog or cat.

TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

The Fall of Connecticut’s Legendary Charter Oak

For centuries, a massive white oak stood in Hartford as a gathering place for Native Americans and later became one of Connecticut’s most famous symbols. Its legendary connection to the colony’s charter helped earn it the name “Charter Oak,” cementing its place in Connecticut folklore.

In 1856, a powerful wind and rain storm finally brought the enormous tree down. Connecticut residents mourned the loss, but they preserved pieces of the oak as treasured reminders of its history. Wood from the tree was crafted into furniture and other keepsakes, including a ceremonial chair used by the president of the Connecticut State Senate.

The Charter Oak’s legacy continued long after its fall. A monument now marks the site in downtown Hartford, while paintings, a postage stamp, a commemorative half-dollar, and Connecticut’s state quarter have all helped keep the story alive. Descendants of the original tree can still be found around the state today.
