TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
When President Roosevelt Rode Electric in Hartford
In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt made headlines in Hartford when he rolled through the city streets—not in a horse-drawn carriage, but in an electric automobile.
At the dawn of the 20th century, nearly half of America’s cars ran on electricity, and Roosevelt’s ride marked the first time a sitting president took part in a public motorcade.
The car was a Columbia Electric Victoria Phaeton, built right in Hartford by the Columbia Electric Vehicle Company. Powered by two hefty 20-volt batteries and topping out at about 13 miles per hour, the vehicle was a technological marvel of its day. The president rode up front, trailed by an entourage of men on horseback, bicycles, and automobiles, as thousands of spectators lined the streets to watch history in motion.
Behind the wheel—literally—was Connecticut’s own innovation. Alfred Pope, a bicycle magnate turned automobile pioneer, had steered Columbia into producing both gas and electric vehicles, cementing the state’s early role in shaping America’s automotive future.
