TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
The Bold Voyage That Sparked Connecticut’s First English Settlement
In September 1633, a determined group of English settlers sailed up the Connecticut River and changed the course of history. Led by William Holmes, the party set out from Plimoth Plantation with a mission: establish a foothold in the fertile Connecticut River Valley before the Dutch could monopolize the fur trade.
When the settlers’ small vessel passed the Dutch stronghold known as the “House of Hope” near present-day Hartford, tensions flared. Dutch lookouts threatened cannon fire, but Holmes stood firm, declaring his right to continue upriver. To the surprise of many, the English ship slipped past unscathed, carrying with it the supplies and timber needed to build a new trading post.
The group settled several miles north of Hartford, near the mouth of the Farmington River. What began as a fortified outpost quickly drew more English families from Massachusetts and Plimoth. Within a few years, the settlement grew into Windsor—the first permanent English community in Connecticut. Together with nearby Hartford and Wethersfield, these early towns laid the foundation for the colony of Connecticut in 1636.
