Windsor Locks Tornado Leaves Trail of Destruction

In October 1979, north-central Connecticut experienced one of the most powerful tornadoes in state history. An F-4 tornado carved a path four miles long and a quarter-mile wide through Windsor Locks, Suffield, and into Massachusetts, leaving destruction in its wake.

Connecticut rarely sees tornadoes, and strong storms are exceptionally uncommon. Meteorologists were caught off guard by this freak early October event, with tornado warnings issued only minutes before the funnel cloud touched down.

The tornado caused massive damage to homes, businesses, and landmarks, including the near-total destruction of the Bradley Air Museum, where antique aircraft were reduced to wreckage.

Over 60 structures and three dozen businesses were destroyed, three lives were lost, and hundreds more were injured. The storm’s devastation prompted the activation of the Connecticut National Guard and imposed a curfew to protect the community.

Adjusted for inflation, the F-4 tornado caused nearly $700 million in damage, marking it as one of the costliest storms in U.S. history.
