Calder’s “Stegosaurus” Roars to Life in Hartford

In 1973, Hartford gained a bold new landmark when world-renowned artist Alexander Calder unveiled his massive Stegosaurus sculpture downtown. Towering 50 feet tall and painted in Calder’s signature red-orange hue, the striking steel creation was inspired by the prehistoric creature—but rendered in his iconic abstract style.

Made from 45 steel plates bolted together, Stegosaurus stands proudly on the Alfred E. Burr Memorial Mall between City Hall and the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. Commissioned by the Ella Burr McManus Trust Fund as a tribute to Alfred E. Burr, founder of the Hartford Times, the piece quickly became a symbol of Hartford’s artistic spirit and resilience—proof that even a “dinosaur” can be timeless.
