SUNDAY EVENTS ACROSS CONNECTICUT

TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

Kennedy’s Quiet Campaign Amid a Global Crisis

In October 1962, Connecticut welcomed President John F. Kennedy with open arms — unaware that he was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. More than 100,000 people gathered across Bridgeport, Waterbury, and New Haven to hear the young president speak, waving flags and cheering as his motorcade passed.

Behind the charm and campaign promises, Kennedy was managing a secret crisis that would soon bring the world to the brink of nuclear war — the Cuban Missile Crisis. Just days before his Connecticut trip, he had seen aerial photos proving the Soviet Union was building missile sites in Cuba, only 90 miles from U.S. shores.

Still, Kennedy honored his commitment to campaign for his close friend, Senatorial candidate Abe Ribicoff, and other Connecticut Democrats. For four short hours, he gave impassioned speeches about the economy, national defense, and unity — never hinting at the high-stakes confrontation unfolding behind the scenes.

That same night, reconnaissance flights over Cuba confirmed the presence of nuclear missiles capable of striking much of the continental United States. Less than a week later, Kennedy would address the nation — and the world — about the looming threat.

His visit to Connecticut on that autumn day would be remembered not just as a political stop, but as a moment of calm before one of the most dangerous chapters in American history.
