TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
Halloween Pranks and Merry Mischief in Early 20th-Century Connecticut
Long before modern celebrations, Halloween in Connecticut featured many of the familiar sights we enjoy today—jack o’ lanterns, cider, masquerades, witches, and ghosts. But alongside these festive touches came a fair share of mischief that sometimes tested the patience of local authorities.
Police reports from 1905 show that young pranksters caused headaches across towns like Bristol, unhinging gates, tossing rotten vegetables through windows, and even creating fire hazards with jack o’ lanterns. While officials supported “reasonable” celebrations, repeated antics prompted extra patrols to keep the peace.
By the 1920s, Halloween hijinks had escalated in some areas. Hartford firefighters handled small blazes started by pranksters, while trolley lines were disrupted by dummies on tracks or obstacles such as oil barrels. Elsewhere, inventive troublemakers in Windsor suspended sleighs from buildings and repositioned carts in unexpected locations, delighting some and frustrating others.
These stories remind us that Halloween mischief has long been a Connecticut tradition, blending creativity, chaos, and the timeless thrill of the season.
