SUNDAY EVENTS ACROSS CONNECTICUT

TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

James Gould and the Nation’s First Law School Legacy

James Gould, a Connecticut native born in Branford in 1770, overcame early doubts about his abilities—especially his poor eyesight—to become a leading figure in American legal education. After graduating from Yale College at 21, Gould studied law and joined the Litchfield Law School, the first law school in the United States, as a student under founder Tapping Reeve.

Recognizing Gould’s talent, Reeve invited him to co-teach at the school when he joined the Connecticut Supreme Court. Together, they crafted a rigorous 14-month curriculum emphasizing study, debate, and practical apprenticeships that prepared students for influential careers in law and government.

Gould eventually took full control of the Litchfield Law School in 1820, guiding it for 13 years and producing hundreds of graduates who shaped early American legal and political life. Alumni included U.S. senators, congressmen, governors, Supreme Court chief justices, and notable figures such as Aaron Burr, John C. Calhoun, Horace Mann, and Levi Woodbury. Through his teaching and writings, Gould helped set a higher standard for the legal profession, leaving a lasting mark on Connecticut and the nation.
