SUNDAY EVENTS ACROSS CONNECTICUT

TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

THE NIGHT BATTLINO SHOCKED MADISON SQUARE GARDEN

In the winter of 1930, a young Hartford fighter named Christopher “Bat” Battalino stepped into the ring at Madison Square Garden facing impossible odds. His opponent, the legendary Kid Chocolate of Cuba, entered the bout with a staggering record, near-flawless skill, and the heavy backing of oddsmakers. Battalino? He brought something less measurable but far more explosive: grit.

Born in Hartford to Italian immigrant parents, Battalino carved his path first as a national amateur featherweight champion before turning pro and capturing the World Featherweight title. But it was his December showdown with Kid Chocolate that cemented his legacy. Before a roaring crowd of 18,000 — including 1,500 proud Connecticut fans and Governor John Trumbull himself — Battalino was knocked down hard in the first round. Bloodied and shaken, he looked finished. Instead, he dug in.

Across 15 bruising rounds, Battalino clawed his way back, outlasting and out-fighting one of the era’s most celebrated boxers. When the final decision was announced in his favor, the arena exploded. Governor Trumbull summed it up simply: “Chocolate had the skill. Battalino had the fighting spirit.”

Battalino held his title for three years and became one of Hartford’s most beloved figures — not just for his boxing, but for his character. In 1929, he even earned a medal for rescuing a drowning child from the Park River. His life and legacy remain woven into Connecticut’s story, his greatest victory still remembered nearly a century later.

A hometown underdog. A world-class upset. A moment in Connecticut history that still punches above its weight.
