THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

Survivor Of A Great Industrial Meltdown

Along the Blackberry River in East Canaan rises a striking 40-foot marble tower — the last remaining 19th-century blast furnace of its kind in Connecticut. Known today as the Beckley Furnace Industrial Monument, this massive structure is the sole survivor of an industry that once defined the northwest corner of the state. At one time, more than 20 blast furnaces operated in the region, fueled by rich iron ore deposits discovered near Salisbury in the 1700s. Connecticut-forged iron even played a vital role in the American Revolution, supplying high-quality metal used to manufacture cannons and other weaponry for the Continental Army.

Built in 1847, the Beckley Furnace ran continuously for more than seven decades. Once ignited, blast furnaces operated around the clock, generating extreme heat to melt iron ore, charcoal, and limestone into usable metal. The process required enormous amounts of timber, leading to widespread deforestation that, combined with growing competition from larger Midwestern foundries and dwindling local resources, eventually brought the state’s iron era to an end in the early 20th century.

After operations ceased, the site was preserved in recognition of its historical significance. The State of Connecticut later transformed it into an official industrial monument and state park, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Today, visitors can explore the grounds, learn about Connecticut’s once-thriving iron industry, and experience a rare, tangible connection to the state’s industrial roots.
