January 9, 1788: Connecticut became the fifth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution, joining the union as a key player in shaping the nation’s foundational document, drafted the year before in Philadelphia.
January 18, 1978: In the early hours of the morning, the snow-covered roof of the Hartford Civic Center Arena collapsed just hours after a UConn basketball game. Miraculously, no one was hurt. Investigations revealed design and construction flaws in the roof’s “space truss” design, prompting critical lessons in structural engineering.
