ON THIS DAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

Connecticut Passes the First General Copyright Law

On January 29, 1783, Connecticut made history by becoming the first state to enact a general copyright law. Titled “An Act for the Encouragement of Literature and Genius,” this groundbreaking legislation set the stage for protecting authors' rights in the early United States.

Before this law, colonial printing was limited, with many authors sending their manuscripts to England for publication due to the lack of resources and protections in the colonies. Local printers often focused on newspapers, broadsides, and imported books, leaving authors vulnerable to piracy and unauthorized reproductions.

The push for copyright protections gained momentum during the Revolutionary era, fueled by advocates like Noah Webster and John Ledyard.

Webster, known for his educational works including his famous “blue-backed” speller, lobbied for safeguards across multiple states but initially met resistance.

Success came with Ledyard, who authored A Journal of Captain Cook’s Last Voyage to the Pacific Ocean.

On this day in 1783, the Connecticut General Assembly passed the nation’s first general copyright statute, granting authors exclusive rights for 14 years with an option to renew.

This law not only protected Ledyard’s work, published later that year in Hartford, but also set a precedent for other states to adopt similar measures. It marked a pivotal moment in the fight to encourage creativity and secure intellectual property, laying the groundwork for modern copyright laws.
