ON THIS DAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY: THE FRISBEE TAKES FLIGHT

festival frisbee GIF by Chiemsee Summer

On January 23, 1957, Wham-O began mass-producing its first flying discs under the name "Pluto Platter," marking the start of what would become one of the most iconic toys in history. But the roots of this toy trace back to Bridgeport, Connecticut, where Civil War veteran William Russell Frisbie founded the Frisbie Pie Company in 1871.

Frisbie's pies were sold in tins with a distinctive ridged rim, and as local legend has it, schoolchildren along the Connecticut shoreline discovered that these tins made perfect flying projectiles. Soon, the pastime of tossing Frisbie pie tins became a beloved local activity, reaching college campuses like Yale.

While Walter Morrison's post-WWII invention of a plastic flying disc was initially unrelated to the Connecticut trend, Wham-O capitalized on the pie tin legacy.

Inspired by stories of kids shouting "Frisbie!" while tossing tins, the company reworked its design for better aerodynamics and renamed the toy “Frisbee,” altering the spelling to avoid legal issues.

The rest is history — Wham-O sold over 200 million Frisbees before passing the torch to Mattel in 1994.

From a humble Bridgeport bakery to a global phenomenon, the Frisbee remains a Connecticut-born legend, embodying ingenuity, playfulness, and lasting cultural impact.
