THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
How Ida Bailey Allen Helped Invent the Celebrity Chef
Long before food television and viral recipes, Ida Bailey Allen quietly reshaped how Americans cooked, ate, and learned about food. Born in Danielson in 1885, Allen combined formal training in domestic science with sharp media instincts to become one of the first nationally recognized food authorities. For millions of households, she was known simply as “the Nation’s Homemaker.”
After publishing her first cookbook in 1916, Allen rose to prominence through magazine writing and radio, where she pioneered ideas that now feel standard, including taste-tested recipes and listener-submitted content. Her long-running national radio program turned cooking advice into entertainment, while her innovative approach to advertising helped define how sponsored media would work for decades to come.
Allen later became the first woman to host a television cooking show and went on to write more than 55 books, selling over 20 million copies. While some of her views reflect the social norms of her time, her lasting impact is undeniable: she made everyday cooking approachable, practical, and media-driven, laying the groundwork for the celebrity chefs who followed.

Why Connecticut Is Still Holding Onto Classic Snow Days
While nearby New York City shifted to remote learning during the recent winter storm, most Connecticut districts stuck with traditional snow days. State policy, local control, and the 180-day school requirement mean virtual days don’t count, keeping sledding, snowmen, and old-school snow days alive.
Bald Eagle Sightings Surge Across Connecticut This Winter
Wildlife officials report a spike in bald eagle sightings this season, especially at the Shepaug Dam in Southbury. Strong conservation efforts, open winter waters, and healthy fish populations have helped the state rebound from near-zero nesting pairs decades ago to dozens of active territories today.
