CONNECTICUT HISTORY: THE USS NAUTILUS LAUNCHES A NEW ERA
On January 21, 1954, a crowd gathered along the banks of the Thames River in Groton to witness a historic moment. Among them were First Lady Mamie Eisenhower, military officials, and General Dynamics employees, all watching as the USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine, slipped into the water. With this launch, the United States Navy officially entered the nuclear age.
The Nautilus had been under construction since 1952, when President Harry Truman laid its keel at the Groton shipyard. Unlike traditional diesel-powered submarines, the nuclear reactor aboard the Nautilus allowed it to travel farther and faster without needing to surface for air or supplies. It would soon break records, proving the potential of nuclear propulsion.
As Mrs. Eisenhower christened the submarine with a bottle of champagne, the Nautilus prepared for a series of trials before making history on its maiden voyage. In 1955, it completed the longest single submarine journey at the time, traveling from New London to Puerto Rico. Just three years later, it became the first vessel to sail beneath the North Pole, cementing its place in naval history.
After 26 years of service, the USS Nautilus was decommissioned in 1980 and later became the official ship of Connecticut.
Today, visitors can step aboard this historic submarine at the Submarine Force Museum in Groton, where it remains a powerful symbol of innovation and American naval strength.
