ON THIS DAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

The First U.S. Figure Skating Championships Took Place in New Haven

On this day in 1914, New Haven, Connecticut, made history by hosting the first-ever U.S. figure skating championship—a pivotal moment in American skating history.

Figure skating had been a popular pastime in the U.S. for decades, but modern competitive figure skating—featuring graceful, dance-like movements—was still a relatively new concept in America at the time. The International Skating Union of America organized the championship, inviting amateur skaters from across the country to compete at New Haven Arena on Wall Street.

The competition crowned its first champions, including Theresa Weld Blanchard, who won the women’s title and later became a three-time Olympian. In the men’s category, Canadian skater Norman Mackie Scott took the top prize before going on to win Canada’s national title later that year. Weld and her partner, Nathaniel Niles, also took home the pairs skating championship, pioneering the sport in the U.S.

This historic event helped establish figure skating as a competitive sport in the United States, paving the way for future Olympians and national champions. It all began right here in New Haven, today in Connecticut history.
