Last chance to learn maritime handcrafts at The Nautical Arts Workshop
If you’ve ever wanted to learn woodworking the old-fashioned way—with hand tools and maritime flair—this is your last chance.
The Nautical Arts Workshop in Deep River will conclude its hands-on weekend woodworking classes in July 2025. Private lessons will end in August.
Classes are held in a cozy, hand-built barn and welcome all skill levels. Students create individual projects using techniques rooted in Connecticut’s seafaring history. While the gallery will remain open, now’s the time to sign up before this chapter closes.

Connecticut libraries and cultural institutions are the latest to face sudden cuts in federal aid. The National Institute of Museum and Library Services has announced it will halt $2.1 million in funding, which supported summer reading programs, e-book access, and resources for the blind. Library leaders say the cuts could affect more than a million residents who rely on these services for education and connectivity.
🔥 DEEP Announces Prescribed Burns to Prevent Wildfires
To reduce brush fire risks and support woodland health, Connecticut DEEP has announced six springtime controlled burns across the state. Target areas include forests and wildlife habitats in Hampton, Voluntown, Plainfield, Suffield, Mansfield, and Vernon. The burns aim to manage invasive species, improve rare habitats, and train wildfire response teams. Burn dates will be weather-dependent and coordinated with local officials.
