Spend the day exploring local businesses, unique finds, and downtown vibes

Downtown Fairfield is turning into one big walkable shopping experience on May 6 with its Shop & Stroll Into Spring event. Visitors can browse everything from fashion and jewelry to books, gifts, home décor, and more while supporting local businesses throughout the area. It’s designed to be a relaxed, community-focused outing that makes it easy to spend a few hours wandering through town.

The event takes place throughout Downtown Fairfield and runs rain or shine. Whether you’re looking for a Mother’s Day gift, planning a dinner outing, or just want an excuse to get out and explore, this is a solid way to enjoy the spring weather while shopping local.

One small donation can make a big difference for Connecticut families

The annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive returns May 9 from 9 am to 5 pm across Lower Fairfield County, giving residents an easy way to help local food banks. All you have to do is leave a bag of non-perishable food items by your mailbox, and letter carriers will collect and deliver the donations directly to local organizations in need.

The drive helps restock shelves before the summer months, when food insecurity often rises for many families. Donations like canned goods, pasta, cereal, and rice are encouraged, and there’s also a virtual option available for those who want to contribute fresh produce online.

Handmade goods, live music, food vendors, and Mother’s Day fun all weekend long

The Milford Artisan Market returns May 9–10 from 10 am to 4 pm on the Milford Green, celebrating its 10th anniversary with one of its biggest events yet. More than 160 local makers and crafters will be selling handmade jewelry, décor, apparel, specialty foods, and more in a lively outdoor market setting.

Along with shopping, visitors can enjoy free yoga classes, live music, giveaways, dance demonstrations, food vendors, and Mother’s Day photo opportunities throughout the weekend. Admission is free, making it an easy and family-friendly way to spend part of the weekend while supporting local creators.

If you’re still looking for a Mother’s Day gift, this Splash Wines deal is a pretty solid win. Right now, you can get 18 top-rated bottles of wine for just $69 — or around $55 with code MOM — with options for all red, all white, or a mixed collection. The bundle includes wines from around the world and saves up to 77% off regular pricing.

Each package comes with 18 full-size bottles, making it perfect for moms who love hosting, trying new wines, or simply keeping the kitchen stocked for spring and summer get-togethers. There’s also an option to grab two cases at an even bigger discount if you want to split the order with family or stock up ahead of time.

THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

The Inventor Behind Instant Photography

Long before smartphone cameras and instant uploads, photography required patience. Film had to be developed through a time-consuming chemical process before anyone could see the final image. That changed thanks to Edwin Land, a Bridgeport native and the co-founder of Polaroid, whose inventions completely transformed how people captured and shared memories.

Land was fascinated by science from a young age and eventually left Harvard to focus on his own experiments involving polarized light. He later founded what became Polaroid in 1937, producing innovative lenses and optical technology that would eventually be used for everything from sunglasses to military equipment during World War II. His work quickly earned him a reputation as one of America’s most brilliant inventors.

The idea that made Land a household name came after a simple question from his young daughter, who wanted to know why she couldn’t immediately see a photograph he had just taken. That moment inspired him to develop the world’s first instant camera system, leading to the launch of Polaroid’s self-developing photos in the late 1940s. The cameras became a cultural phenomenon, and their iconic square photos would later inspire platforms like Instagram decades later.

If your car’s been due for an oil change for… let’s just say “a while,” this deal makes it a little less painful. Valvoline Instant Oil Change is offering up to 30% off synthetic blend and full synthetic oil changes at participating Connecticut locations, with prices starting at $55.99.

The service includes up to 5 quarts of Valvoline motor oil, a standard oil filter, and a maintenance check completed in about 15 minutes. No appointment is needed, and you can stay in your car the entire time while certified technicians handle everything. Plus, customers also get 15% off select preventive maintenance services during their visit.
