THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

Connecticut Created America’s First Automobile Speed Limit

Long before modern highways and traffic jams, Connecticut became the first state in the country to create an official speed limit law for automobiles. Passed in 1901, the law restricted cars to 12 miles per hour in cities and 15 miles per hour on rural roads, making it one of the earliest attempts to regulate the rapidly growing automobile industry.

At the time, horses and horse-drawn carriages still heavily outnumbered cars, so the law also focused on keeping roads safe for animals. Drivers were required to slow down near horses and even stop completely if an animal appeared frightened by the approaching vehicle. Intersections also required extra caution, with motorists expected to reduce speed when approaching crossings.

Even though enforcing speed limits was difficult before modern radar technology existed, the penalties were serious enough to discourage reckless driving. Violators could face fines that would equal thousands of dollars today. Connecticut’s early traffic laws helped set the stage for the road safety rules and driving regulations that eventually spread across the United States.
