THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
Juneās Historic Draft Day and the Stateās Call to Service
Back in June 1917, Connecticut played a critical role in Americaās mobilization for World War I. After the U.S. entered the conflict in April, Congress pushed through the Selective Service Act to meet the urgent need for troops. June 5 was declared National Registration Day, when every man aged 21 to 31 in the state had to register for the military draft ā no exceptions. Failure to comply meant possible arrest and jail time.
The Hartford Courant made sure no one missed the memo, plastering its front page with urgent appeals and detailed registration info. About 158,000 men across Connecticut were expected to sign up, with Hartford alone housing a tenth of that number. Unlike other cities that faced protests or chaos, Connecticutās registration day went relatively smoothly, fueled by strong local support for the war effort.
Still, not everyone marched to the same drum. At Yale, the Collegiate Anti-Militarism League led by Professor William Phelps vowed to register but refused to fight if drafted ā boldly declaring their conscientious objection to violence. This mix of patriotic enthusiasm and principled dissent captured the complicated spirit of the state during a pivotal moment in history.
