THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
Elizabeth Park Rose Garden Draws Massive Crowds in Bloom
For more than a century, Elizabeth Park has drawn visitors to Hartford and West Hartford for its iconic Rose Garden, and one of its most memorable surges came in 1933 when roughly 15,000 people visited in a single day to see the blooms. Even rainy weather didn’t stop crowds from arriving from across the country, all eager to experience the historic gardens in peak bloom.
Elizabeth Park spans over 100 acres and was originally gifted to the city in the 1890s by financier Charles M. Pond, who dedicated the land in honor of his wife, Elizabeth. The park was later shaped by the renowned Olmsted and Son design firm, with its signature Rose Garden taking form in 1904 under superintendent Theodore Wirth.
Today, the garden remains the oldest municipal rose garden in the United States and one of the largest, featuring more than 15,000 rose bushes and hundreds of varieties. Its enduring beauty continues to make it one of Connecticut’s most visited public spaces each summer.
