Step Into the Connecticut Home That Helped Change America’s Future

The Joseph Webb House in Wethersfield isn’t just a beautifully preserved Georgian landmark — it’s where George Washington and French General Rochambeau mapped out the Siege of Yorktown, the decisive battle that secured America’s independence.

Once known as ā€œHospitality Hall,ā€ this home hosted the social and political elite of the 18th century — including Washington himself — blending lavish gatherings with nation-shaping strategy sessions. Today, you can walk the same halls where history was written, tour neighboring colonial homes, and immerse yourself in Connecticut’s Revolutionary past.

šŸŽŸļø Guided tours run May through October and resume in December at the Webb-Deane-Stevens Museum.

Most gutter guards promise the world but still leave you climbing ladders to clear debris.
LeafGuard takes a completely different approach—instead of adding another layer to your existing gutters, they replace your entire system with a one-piece design that's engineered so debris never gets inside.

The science is pretty straightforward: water follows the curved hood into the gutter using liquid adhesion, while leaves, pine needles, and debris roll right off. No joints mean no leaks, and the aluminum is 20% thicker than standard gutters. With over 650,000 ladder-related injuries happening annually, eliminating gutter maintenance isn't just convenient—it's smart.

Connecticut Lifestyles readers can take advantage of 75% off installation plus an additional $200 off. That's significant savings on a system backed by a lifetime no-clog guarantee and 25+ years of proven performance.

THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

The Flood We Forgot: Connecticut’s Second Disaster of 1955

In the fall of 1955, Connecticut was still recovering from the devastation caused by back-to-back hurricanes Connie and Diane when another catastrophe struck. Just two months later, on October 15 and 16, heavy rains once again overwhelmed rivers and towns across the state — submerging neighborhoods, destroying bridges, and leaving residents scrambling to protect what little remained.

Hartford, already battered from the August floods, faced rising waters a second time. Workers at the Stanley P. Rockwell Company rushed to fill sandbags along Homestead Avenue, while nearby Rice Heights housing project disappeared beneath the floodwaters. In Simsbury, barns collapsed, fields vanished under several feet of water, and bridges in West Granby were washed away.

While most remember the August storm as the ā€œFlood of 1955,ā€ the October floods were a grim encore — a reminder that nature’s force can strike twice before recovery ever begins. It was one of Connecticut’s darkest years, but also a defining test of the state’s strength and spirit.

Surprise vet bills can certainly bite. But fear not, pet insurance can be your lifeline. Some plans cover major surgeries — which can cost up to $7,000 — so you can afford the best care for your pet.

Check out our top-rated pet insurance providers, with some plans offering coverage for just $1 a day, multi-pet coverage, and reimbursement options of up to 90%. With the right coverage, you could keep your pet (and your wallet) happy.
