THIS MONTH IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY

The Man Who Drew the First Map of the United States

Abel Buell was one of the most restless and complicated figures in early American history. Born in Killingworth, Connecticut, in 1742, he trained as a goldsmith and engraver but spent his life jumping from one venture to another. His résumé included everything from inventor and armsmaker to mint master and privateer, alongside more infamous chapters that included counterfeiting and public punishment. Despite his constant ambition, financial success almost always eluded him.

Buell’s most enduring contribution came in 1784, when he produced A New and Correct Map of the United States of North America, the first map of the newly independent nation created and published by an American. Crafted in his New Haven workshop shortly after the Revolutionary War, the map reflected both the optimism and uncertainty of a brand-new country. It boldly showed state and national boundaries shaped by the Treaty of Paris, including Connecticut’s far-reaching territorial claims stretching west to the Mississippi River.

Though meticulously researched and symbolically rich, the map was not a commercial hit during Buell’s lifetime. He continued drifting between projects and locations, often burdened by debt, and ultimately died poor in New Haven. Yet history proved kinder than his era. More than two centuries later, one surviving copy of Buell’s map sold for $1.8 million at auction, cementing his place as the unlikely cartographer who first put the United States on paper.
