SNL STARS ARE COMING TO TOWN!

TODAY IN CONNECTICUT HISTORY
The Colt Armory Fire Devastates Hartford
On the morning of February 4, 1864, a piercing steam whistle sounded through Hartford, warning residents of a major disaster. The massive East Armory of the Colt Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company was ablaze, with flames rapidly consuming the building.
Workers had first spotted smoke shortly after 7:00 am, but when they attempted to use the factory’s fire hoses, no water flowed. Some later speculated that the fire was an act of sabotage, possibly by a Confederate sympathizer angered by Colt’s support of the Union Army.
Fueled by oil-soaked wooden floors, the fire spread quickly, overwhelming firefighters despite their best efforts. By 9:00 am, the building’s famous onion dome and gold colt statuette collapsed in a fiery crash. By day’s end, the East Armory and front office buildings were completely destroyed, causing an estimated $2 million in damages and leaving 900 workers unemployed.
Fortunately, thanks to the foresight of Elizabeth Jarvis Colt, widow of company founder Samuel Colt, the factory had insurance coverage—something Samuel had never carried in his lifetime. This allowed the company to rebuild the East Armory within three years while continuing operations in its remaining buildings.
Rising from the ashes, Colt Firearms reaffirmed its place as one of Hartford’s most iconic manufacturers, ensuring its legacy endured.
